Spoon {philosophies} : Creative couples

This Valentines day we are reminded that it’s the people we have chosen to surround ourselves with that add the most value to our lives.

We take inspiration from tight-knit friends, families and couples, who support one another through thick and thin. This week we’ve chosen to share the working lives of a few particular couples, who have taken the brave decision to carve their own career path together.  We take a closer look into their work / life balance philosophies …

Story Coffee

We first got to know Sof, co-founder of the independently run café, Story Coffee thanks to a close friend’s recommendation. We gelled over common interest in natural food, design and simple living.  Sof and Jo are the couple behind Story coffee. They have taken a tiny corner of South London and turned it into a space that lends itself to intimate brunches on a Sunday morning or gatherings of like-minded strangers at their sporadic supper clubs.

Every detail from the simple food – all made in-house - to the sleek interiors have been immaculately designed and thought-out, creating a space that we’ll certainly be popping into time and time again.

Lucy and Graeme,  couple and co-founders of Rowen and Wren have a passion 'for eclectic design, muted colours and simple functionality that means everything they sell sits as comfortably in an urban loft as a country retreat.'

“We’re both very inspired by beautiful products. We love to fill our home with updated-classics, so when we’re designing and sourcing for Rowen & Wren it’s simply like choosing delectable pieces for our home but just for a much wider audience.” Lucy

“We try to keep our business and personal life separate as much as possible, however this can prove to be tricky at times. Our biggest challenge is switching off, it’s very hard not to spend every evening discussing the business so we try and enforce a no-business night to remind us we’re a couple as well as business partners.” Graeme

"We love cooking and enjoying food together, have been vegetarian for many years and want to use this blog as a platform to show you what is bubbling in our pots and landing on our plates from one day to the next. Simple, balanced meals for every day. A wide range of recipes with seasonal ingredients and influences from all over the world.” {Kraut Kopf bio]

Joel and Molly are the founders (and now engaged to be married!) of the pyjama wear company, Desmond & Dempsey. Despite making clothes to sleep in for a living, the pair generate enthusiasm and creativity, the kind of people you'd like to go for a drink with.

"Running a business without Joel would be…Far more chaotic." Molly

"I decided to go into business with Molly because she kept ruining my work shirts and I was desperate to get her own pyjamas." Joel

Symmetry Breakfast

Any self-proclaimed foodie on Instagram would have heard of Symmetry Breakfast. We first stumbled across Michael’s account back when Spoon Cereals was in its infancy, two years ago. Co-founder Annie was lucky to meet up with Michael, who explained the whole story over a cup of coffee at his work place at the time – the V&A, London.

Originally a ‘coffee and a cigarette’ kind of morning person, Michael took up the habit of cooking breakfast for his partner each morning. He used Instagram as a tool to document his morning breakfast. His signature symmetrical style has won an audience of over 500k and has meant that some big brands are knocking on his door.

“People wonder if I’m crazy or obsessive" Michael says, "but it is a declaration of love, really. I’m dedicated – both to breakfast and to Mark.” [Taken from an interview with the Guardian]
