At Spoon, we love creating recipes which are packed full of flavour and good for your mind and body. In our latest blog, we explore the key health benefits of cinnamon, beetroot and other common ingredients and nutrients.

Beetroot

Beetroot is another delicious and versatile ingredient which is packed full of flavour and goodness. The health benefits of beetroot are varied because it’s rich in iron, fibre, B and C vitamins. Beetroot has therefore been associated with boosting your immune system and lowering blood pressure.

Our Berry Fix muesli contains organic beetroot powder to provide you with an extra little bit of nutritional value. It also turns the milk pink!

Cinnamon

There are a number of health benefits to cinnamon which make it a great natural sweetener to include in baking and cooking. Cinnamon contains high amounts of antioxidants. It is thought that antioxidants, which are commonly found in fruit and vegetables, can help to strengthen your immune system and protect against a variety of diseases. It also has anti-inflammatory properties which may help to reduce the painful impact of various illnesses and diseases.

The health benefits of cinnamon are one of the reasons we choose to use it in our signature Cinnamon + Pecan granola (the other being how delicious it tastes). We recommend using cinnamon when you next get creative in the kitchen!

Chicory

Chicory fibre has a very low glycemic index which makes it a great natural sweetener when you want to reduce sugar. It also makes a great addition to cereal. Our The Low Sugar One granola contains chicory fibre and we love the earthy flavour, as well as its nutritional value.

There are a number of health benefits to chicory which makes it a great ingredient to incorporate into your diet. It contains high levels of inulin, which is a prebiotic that boosts digestive health. It can also help to improve the health of your liver, protecting against free radicals.

Natural Sugar

Natural sugars are great to use in baking as an alternative to refined sugar. They can be found in fruit, honey, agave and maple syrup - all of which can be used for breakfasts, snacks and more.

Since it is hard to cut sugar out of your diet completely, opting for natural sugars, instead of processed and refined sugar, can have a number of benefits.

Unlike refined sugar, natural sugars like maple syrup contain a variety of minerals, including zinc which can help to protect against cardiovascular disorders. Indeed, it is thought that honey has antibacterial properties, and both honey and maple syrup contain antioxidants which may boost your immune system.

Fibre

We know fibre is not technically an ingredient in its own: it is a complex carbohydrate that can be found in a number of different foods. Fibre is known to be highly important for digestive health and regularity. According to the NHS, it is associated with lowering the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer.

We ensure that all of our mueslis and granolas are high in fibre so that you have the chance to experience the health benefits associated with it.

The great thing about ingredients like cinnamon, beetroot and natural sweeteners is that you can incorporate them into your daily life as part of a healthier lifestyle. The next time you’re baking, why not try incorporating these ingredients? If you use any of our granolas or mueslis to create breakfast bowls, snacks and more, make sure to send your recipes to us too. We love getting inspired!
